What is coaching?
At Nurtured, we think of coaching as a space with a dedicated professional to focus on your growth. Coaching is having someone on your team, someone to walk alongside you on your journey as you come to your own answers—holding up a mirror and reflecting back to you, challenging you to challenge yourself, and providing laughs, support, encouragement, and accountability as you carve your own path.

How is coaching different from therapy?
We’re so glad you asked. There are a few key differences. One is the timeframes we explore. Coaching mostly focuses on visioning for the present and future, while therapy can offer better support in understanding the past and how it has shaped the present.
Also, coaches are not trained to diagnose or pathologize any parts of the human experience. While coaches should be trauma-aware, they are not necessarily trained to provide support for trauma processing or mental health crises.
Additionally, coaching (especially with Nurtured) tends to focus more on action than therapy traditionally does. While we will certainly talk about feelings and experiences, every session will wrap with action item(s) and an accountability plan. We practice and experiment with learnings as they arise.
Therapy and coaching can both be immensely beneficial resources depending on your circumstances. At Nurtured, we are clear about our expertise and will be transparent if it seems that coaching may not be the most supportive or effective resource for your needs.

I’ve never worked with a coach before. Is that ok?
YES! In fact, we specialize in coaching first-timers. We’re attuned to the vulnerability it takes to get started, and we’re here for it. There are no “dumb” questions, and it’s nearly impossible to show up to coaching “wrong” (”show up” being the operative word). So long as you show up—physically and emotionally—we’ll be good to go.

Do you offer single sessions or only packages?
If you have worked with Shannah before or completed the Go Nurtured program, single sessions are available. These can be especially helpful if you are at a crossroads or something challenging has come up and you would like extra support in navigating it.
If you have not worked with Shannah previously, you’ll need to begin with the Go Nurtured 10-Week Program. This program includes six coaching sessions and is much more effective than single one-off sessions. Trust us on this one—having a handful of sessions allows us to build a foundation, gain momentum, and create long-term change.

What should I expect for our first session?
Firstly, know that it’s normal to feel nervous or uncomfortable as we get started. It’s a vulnerable thing to open up to a new person and it can feel a lil’ awkward at first. We’re honored to be trusted by you, and we got you. Deep breaths and let the butterflies fly.
Before our first session, you’ll be provided with a Discovery Form to complete online. This form will serve as a launching pad for our first session. During our first session, we’ll go over the form and ask questions to clarify and learn more about you. We’re building a foundation for our coaching relationship. At the end of our first session, we’ll name three areas of focus or intentions for our coaching work together. These areas of focus will be guideposts that we’ll come back to throughout our time together. We’ll also schedule our next session at the end of this one.
-
How do we meet?
All sessions are conducted remotely. We can meet over the phone or via video (Google Meets or Facetime). We’ll decide our modality before meeting for our first session.
-
How long are the sessions?
Sessions are one hour.

Any book recommendations for self-growth?
Yes, with a disclaimer that not all books will resonate with people in the same way. What one finds supportive, another may find off-putting. That said, here are a couple of books that have us amped:
— The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
— Untamed by Glennon Doyle
— Year of Yes by Shonda Rhymes
— Belonging by Toko-pa Turner
— You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero
We’ll also offer a gentle nudge here to read slowly and with curiosity. To not race through to tick the books off your list, but rather to check in with yourself along the way…How do the words feel as you read them? What do they bring up?
